Selection Responsibility
Selecting materials is an exciting endeavor that requires collaboration from different stakeholders. The librarian will consult with students, staff (including classroom teachers, department heads, psychologists, SEL coach, and administration), parents, and school organizations (PTA, school site council, equity council, and the instructional leadership team). Ultimately the responsibility of the selection process lies with the librarian, who must gain approval from the administration prior to purchasing the materials.Selection Criteria
The library collection is provided in print and digital formats. As previously mentioned, the collection is representative of the school community and supports students and teachers in their academic endeavors and outside interests. Materials must be reviewed by the librarian or by professional review sources (including websites, organizations, and blogs of professionals like Common Sense Media, Goodreads, Kirkus, and School Library Journal), and must meet the library's vision and program goals. Materials need to pass the following criteria in order to be added to the collection:
Are culturally responsive.
Readability
Artistic quality
Content must be accurate and factual
Text features and visual supports (photographs, illustrations, maps, charts, and graphs) must be accurate, current, and presentable.
Weeding Policy
Collection development is an ongoing process that includes adding and removing materials. Weeding is the systematic and deliberate way in which materials are removed from the collection. Furthermore, it is a process that ensures that materials are current and enticing for students. Weeded materials may be donated, gifted to classrooms and students, used for classroom activities, or recycled depending on their overall condition. Materials may be removed for any of the following reasons:Physical condition
Lack of circulation
Timeliness, copyright
Duplicates unneeded in collection
Superseded editions
Material type outdated
Obsolete information/Information can be found in better resource-databases, etc.
Materials Challenge
The principles of intellectual freedom willed in the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States and manifested in the Library Bill of Rights of the American Library Association are supported. Should a parent, student, teacher, or community member have a complaint about instructional materials, they may begin the process of challenging materials by initiating the NHUSD materials complaint as outlined by Board Policy #C-1312.2. The complaint concerning instructional materials form is linked here for reference and convenience.
